Course Description:
One of the key factors in working safely and humanely with research rodents requires basic competency and understanding of handling and restraint methods of the mouse research model. The goal of this workshop is to provide the novice/unfamiliar participant with the basic principles required to safely handle animals and introduce basic technical skills that are commonly used in research. Skill areas to be demonstrated/practiced include:
- Understand the role of the mouse research model.
- Understand basic biology of the mouse.
- Properly handle and restrain mice for routine procedures, e.g. physical exam, administration of medication, and venipuncture.
- Observe mice for recognition of normal and abnormal physical conditions and behavioral changes.
- Determine gender in young and adult mice.
- Demonstrate methods of identification.
- Demonstrate techniques for administration of medication by the following routes:
- Oral (PO)
- Subcutaneous (SC or SQ)
- Intraperitoneal (IP)
- Intradermal (ID)
- Discuss appropriate methods of euthanasia

Course Description:

The goal of this workshop is to provide the intermediate/advanced participant with the principles and skill sets required to safely collect blood samples as well learn humane euthanasia.
Skill areas to be demonstrated/practiced include:
- Properly handle and restrain mice for routine blood collection procedures.
- Observe mice for recognition of normal and abnormal physical conditions and behavioral changes.
- Demonstrate techniques for sample collection by way of the following techniques
- Intravenous (IV)
- Submandibular (SM)
- Saphenous vein sampling (SV)
- Cardiac Puncture (C)
- Discuss/demonstrate appropriate methods of euthanasia
- Secondary confirmation of euthanasia

Program Description:
This 20-week program is designed for any laboratory animal science professional wishing to prepare for the Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification examination offered by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).
Learners will participate in weekly live virtual classes conducted by the Charles River - Campus Learning (US). Outside of class/lecture sessions, on-line learning and quizzing will assess and reinforce knowledge required for the exam. Students will also have the option to review recordings of the live sessions on-demand and/or in the event they are unable to join a live session.
The program will follow content outlined in the most recent edition of the AALAS LATG Training Manual, Student Workbook and Regulatory Workbook. Lessons will progress by chapter and unit. Unit assessments will be assigned to test interim knowledge levels and each student will attempt a mock examination to complete the program.
